If you are looking for a unique and inspiring home for your next vacation, personal retreat, or business gathering, I would highly recommend this property. I am a property developer who helps manage a world-class retreat center in central California, so it takes a lot to impress me. This home exceeded my expectations.
The owner and manager were both gracious and helped us get acquainted with the features of the home. They were also responsive to our needs throughout our stay, and were diligent about assisting us with any issues that we had. We had a group of 6 stay in the home and it felt spacious. The kitchen is well appointed and we enjoyed cooking meals as well as the breakfasts that were prepared for us (note that breakfasts are only provided weekdays). The phone and internet worked well, and helped us to do some necessary logistics and work.
We enjoyed the infinity pool, patio, and gazebo throughout the days and nights. The grounds were immaculately kept up, and the home as spotless. It is a very private home, and is off the electric grid. I appreciate the owner's commitment to sustainable building and quality construction.
I feel fortunate to have stayed in this beautiful home and hope to return next year. Thank you Refugio Madreselva.
We spent our Christmas here overlooking the Pacific in the distance and monkeys, toucans and other plentiful bird life just below the pool and patio. You couldn’t ask for a more comfortable and spectacular place. With the help of 2 local families, we had a guided bird walk, a horse ride and a jungle trek see several splendid waterfalls (rubber boots are at the house). Several wonderful beaches are nearby with Playa Ventana winning my vote as it has caves that you can walk into and decent body surfing. A highlight was discovering a French bakery in the nearby village of Ojochal. Besides the nature preserve on the Osa Peninsula, a short drive away, I am sure there are many other treasures for us to discover when we return next year.
From the first time you step onto the patio and gaze across the valley at the facing mountains and then down to the waves on the beach below and the "whale's tail"( if the tide is low and it is visible) and out across the Pacific, you just can't believe you are so lucky to have found such a location! Every day I was there I was just so sure I was in the spot with the most beautiful view in the area. But, the pros of this house do not end with the views-- There's the infinity pool for swimming anytime, either in the light and sun of day or under the stars in the evenings. There's the long patio with many designs of lounge chairs and hammocks on which to sit or lie and read or just be quiet or converse with friends. There's also the gazebo for a shaded choice, positioned to be in line of sight of the toucans and the monkeys who reside in the rainforest but who move around to trees close to the property. And when you want to get inside, we enjoyed the very large, native wood dining table that could seat the whole group, the well-equipped kitchen in which the care-taker made breakfasts we looked forward to. There is also the TV room for those who can't leave the news and shows behind and plenty of seating and outlets for computer usage in the living room. The 2 master bedrooms are magnificent; just off the patio and with floor-to-ceiling sliders, they each have a full view of the area and face east so one can lie in bed and watch the sunrise! You can't get much better than that! The other 2 bedrooms have groups and large families in mind and contain multiple beds. There's a place for everyone here. This house was very carefully designed with people's needs in mind, so there are 4 bathrooms, a large covered area to hang clothes up to dry, an outdoor grill and more. But, this house is also very eco-friendly so one has the good feeling of using power from the sun but still having amenities we are used to. Because this house is high up on the mountain, be sure to have access to a strong 4-wheel drive car; the driveway is well maintained, but steep. The drive down to Uvita is 20 minutes which wasn't that long but we tended to organize our days to minimize the number of times we did that drive. There was a rainforest hike we did right on neighboring property which was very interesting and then a waterfall hike further down the road, both come highly recommended. We loved our stay here and certainly plan to return.
This house, and the care-takers that come with it, are lovely and amazing. You'll wake up to the calls of monkeys and birds, and a view that goes on forever. All the creature comforts have been considered and integrated with subtlety, style and eco-friendliness. Yes, it takes 20-minutes to drive down the mountain to get to town (and other excursions), but this is a wonderful base from which to relax, breathe clean air, see a sky full of stars, hike around a bit, birdwatch, and appreciate solitude. I would return next week if I could.
We celebrated my parents' 60th anniversary here. It was wonderful. The house's layout is such that there are places where everyone can gather comfortably, as well as places to retreat. The balcony, with its many chairs, hammocks, etc., was plenty big for all of us to be outside without any of us being on top of each other. Some of us would read, some of us would swim, some of us were doing yoga, others were online, ... and yet it was very quiet and peaceful. The view, as you can see in the advertisement, is spectacular and, being this high up, it is cooler than property in town. The constellations, at night, are breath-taking.
I checked "tourists without a car" because we didn't have a car, even though we went down to the beaches, etc., at least once a day. The staff drove us, which was great because the mountain the house is built on is steep and unpaved. The staff was accommodating, helpful and sweet.
I can't recommend this place highly enough. It is absolutely magical.
This house is spectacular. The view is huge. The swimming pool overlooks the ocean, and there are always birds in the trees and the sky(including a big group of local Toucans). There's a trade-off for staying here; convenience versus setting. It's worth it, if you were closer to town, you wouldn't feel so close to the landscape. We loved eating our meals in the gazebo at the end of the deck, which felt like we were surrounded by wilderness, sky, and ocean.
We were a group of 6 and had plenty of space to spread out. The property manager provided lots of suggested activities, and we had plenty of help around the house which is staffed by a charming family of locals. I look forward to returning.
